The discussion of complex increases in complexity….

Back in October, I wrote Is Your Software Complex.  This has prompted a number of discussions in multiple venues, so it seems a good idea to look at the term “Complex” in a bit more detail.

Like many words, it has a number of distinct meanings, and when one is not clear which meaning is intended, then confusion (and related problems) is sure to occur.

Roger Sessions has been writing about one meaning of complexity for about a decade. His book Simple Architectures for Complex Enterprises created an entire field of study. Overly simplifying [and with apologies to Roger], complexity in this context is a mathematical model based on the number of nodes and interconnects between the nodes.

Dave Snowden formulated the Cynefin Framework nearly 20 years ago which categorizes systems into one of four categories: Simple, Complicated, Complex and Chaotic. Once again oversimplifying, Complex is characterized by “The complex domain represents the “unknown unknowns”. Cause and effect can only be deduced in retrospect. There are no right answers“.

Clearly, these are really different topics that simply happen to share an English word. At the same time there are interesting relationships.  Calculating the Complexity [Sessions] of a Complex [Snowden] system is unlikely to be possible, simply because of the unknowns.  Complicated or Simple [Snowden] systems are well defined, but there is not necessarily a correspondence to the resultant Complexity [Sessions].  So one can have a Complicated [Snowden] System with moderate to low complexity [Sessions], and have a Simple [Snowden] System with very high complexity [Sessions].

One approach to dealing with this is to use Cynfin/Snowden when talking about “problems” (something to be addressed) and Sessions when talking about “solutions” (the concrete resulting system).  As one starts to analyze a problem, there are sure to be “unknown unknowns”.  By the time a system has been “completed” everything about the system (at least for a point in time) is defined – and one can make the appropriate measurements and calculations necessary to evaluate the complexity.

I tried to have a combination of mytharc, standalone, funny, and serious episodes. It’s completely subjective, so the order or even the episodes on the list may not make sense for you. I am hesitant to add any season 9 episodes to the list since the last two season were terrible. Instead of trying to tie up the various threads the previous seven seasons started, the writers created the super soldier arc which muddled the situation even more. ‘Trust No 1” was an episode focusing on Scully which meant lots of great acting by Gillian Anderson – always a plus – and the story was decent, so I think it deserves a spot on the list. The X-Files went all the way back to the beginning with Mulder and Scully returning to Bellefleur, Oregon where they first investigated a case. Many characters were brought back which was nice. In some ways, it was as if The X-Files finally found its way back after wandering through the wilderness for 40 years. I thought this episode set up great potential for season 8 which didn’t work out in the end. Either ways, “Requeim” had fantastic acting and a decent story. Chernobyl Episode 6 watch online. This also marks the last time David Duchovny was a regular on the show which forces me to put it on the list. When Samantha is involved, Mulder immediately changes. He can be easy going all the time, but once Samantha’s abduction comes into play, he is reckless and loses perspective. That’s exactly what happens in “Paper Hearts.” Mulder is manipulated into believing that a serial killer had abducted her instead of aliens. In the end, it wasn’t true and no new information was discovered, but it’s all about the process of getting to that conclusion, and the episode hit it out of the park. Mulder goes off to the Bermuda Triangle looking for a ship, and instead travels back to 1939 where Nazis have taken over. The catch is that some of the people he meets look exactly like people he knows back home. Maybe it was a hallucination and never really happened, but that’s not the point; the episode was a blast. “Trust No One.” This simple phrase became the mantra of our heroes with the death of Deep Throat. He insists, despite irradiated eyewitness accounts, that the core cannot have exploded. So he is not our hero. Maybe it’s going to be the nurse at the nearby hospital, who takes a squiz at the raging fire at the local nuclear power plant and wonders if they have any iodine tablets in stock, just in case. ” says the doctor cheerfully, silhouetted in front of the orange-blue glow of the raging fire at the local nuclear power plant. Dyatlov refuses to countenance the suggestion from underlings that the radiation readings from the plant’s geiger counter-type thing are inaccurate because it has maxed out rather than taking a faithful record. Amid the depicted and narrative chaos, which involves repeated “reveals” of the shattered core – it looks like a nuclear apocalypse in there! ’s water valves will kill the men who do it, but will save the lives of millions. I assume that it will do this by averting something worse than a nuclear reactor’s core exploding and scattering itself over a wide area, but what this is I am not sure. The two men in charge of the safety test that immediately preceded the disaster go down and start turning wheels and obliquely noting that, contrary to their claims in the control room, they did do something wrong during the test. We should be engaged by the tragic flaws and nobility of all this by this point, but the story and characters have gone so uncorralled that it takes all your viewing energy just to keep it fractionally straight. Things may improve over the coming weeks as the smoke clears, and I hope so. Chernobyl is a story that has everything, but at the moment, comrades, justice is not being done to it.|From what I’ve heard it’s extremely accurate about the portrayal of 1980s life in the USSR, and stuff relating to the accident is dramatized to an extent but usually relatively accurate on the whole. I’ve heard episode 5 will give much more hard data on the disaster, and interviews with the showrunners have shown that they know their stuff and are committed to keeping things as accurate as possible. We do know why it blew up. Long story short is poorly trained workers doing a test on a terribly designed reactor. There are youtube videos and such that give a much better detailed explanation with graphics and such if you search, but to give a brief summary, the main problem was the reactor. Reactors need to have something between the nuclear rods to slow down the neutrons and keep the chain reaction going. We call this a neutron moderator. Most US reactors use water as the moderator. The Chernobyl reactor used graphite. When a nuclear reaction starts to get out of hand, it generates a lot of heat. What that means depends on your reactor. That coupled with the design of the control rods used to shut down the reaction. The control rods had a graphite tip so as not to screw with the reaction while they weren’t inserted. But when things went balls up and they inserted them, that meant that the graphite tips actually increased the reaction speed as they were inserted into the reactor, helping it to go further out of control. NBC continued its strong Tuesdays with The Biggest Loser (3.5) and The Jay Leno Show (1.9) which seems to have stabilized. Melrose Place had a repeat last night, but the numbers for it are scary. It only had 774 thousand viewers. I’m wondering if Julianna Margulies was get yet another Emmy nomination. She’s been close to perfect so far, and is amazingly compelling whenever she is on screen. Most of the time her expression is closely guarded, but you can see the anguish behind it. All the dirty, salacious details were about to come into the open, and as abruptly were stopped. Chelsea Handler made a great guest appearance, reveling in the joys of other’s secrets. Amber Madison, the call girl, finally came out in the open, and has plans for a book and interviews. Alicia in her pain, asks Peter for help, who threatens Amber, ending the problem for now.|Retelling the 1986 Chernobyl disaster is an exercise in unburying the truth. What we do know is that the core of a nuclear reactor opened, sending plumes of radioactive material into the air. The toxic fumes not only contaminated the local vegetation and water supply but also poisoned nearby residents, some of whom went on to develop cancer. Within three months of the disaster, more than 30 people had died of acute radiation sickness. Jan Haverkamp, a senior nuclear energy expert at Greenpeace, who said the catastrophe most likely had a severe impact on hundreds of thousands of people. While developing his HBO series, “Chernobyl,” the writer and producer Craig Mazin approached conflicting accounts of the event with a degree of caution. Variety’s “TV Take” podcast. For the most part, the documentary is hauntingly accurate — with the exception of a few artistic liberties. We fact-checked some of the major plot points from the series to determine what’s true and what verges on myth. Chernobyl Episode 6 watch online.
