The discussion of complex increases in complexity….

Back in October, I wrote Is Your Software Complex.  This has prompted a number of discussions in multiple venues, so it seems a good idea to look at the term “Complex” in a bit more detail.

Like many words, it has a number of distinct meanings, and when one is not clear which meaning is intended, then confusion (and related problems) is sure to occur.

Roger Sessions has been writing about one meaning of complexity for about a decade. His book Simple Architectures for Complex Enterprises created an entire field of study. Overly simplifying [and with apologies to Roger], complexity in this context is a mathematical model based on the number of nodes and interconnects between the nodes.

Dave Snowden formulated the Cynefin Framework nearly 20 years ago which categorizes systems into one of four categories: Simple, Complicated, Complex and Chaotic. Once again oversimplifying, Complex is characterized by “The complex domain represents the “unknown unknowns”. Cause and effect can only be deduced in retrospect. There are no right answers“.

Clearly, these are really different topics that simply happen to share an English word. At the same time there are interesting relationships.  Calculating the Complexity [Sessions] of a Complex [Snowden] system is unlikely to be possible, simply because of the unknowns.  Complicated or Simple [Snowden] systems are well defined, but there is not necessarily a correspondence to the resultant Complexity [Sessions].  So one can have a Complicated [Snowden] System with moderate to low complexity [Sessions], and have a Simple [Snowden] System with very high complexity [Sessions].

One approach to dealing with this is to use Cynfin/Snowden when talking about “problems” (something to be addressed) and Sessions when talking about “solutions” (the concrete resulting system).  As one starts to analyze a problem, there are sure to be “unknown unknowns”.  By the time a system has been “completed” everything about the system (at least for a point in time) is defined – and one can make the appropriate measurements and calculations necessary to evaluate the complexity.

But for peace of mind, once we returned to our hotel, I, like everyone else on the crew, threw away the clothes I was wearing, as well as my shoes. Recalling the tragedy that was Chernobyl is spooky enough, but actually visiting ground zero and the surrounding areas of the nuclear disaster will leave a lasting impression on anyone who visits. And apparently, a lot of people visit. When we were leaving Prypiat, we noticed more vans coming into the secured area. Those vans turned out to be tour vans, filled with tourists mostly from Russia and Eastern Europe taking pictures of everything around them. I knew they weren’t journalists because most were dressed in Euro-trash-themed clothing and nearly all had disposable and pocket-sized digital cameras. After packing up our equipment, we drove beyond the 30-kilometer security perimeter, back to habitable grounds. We pulled over at the first convenience shop we saw to get water and snacks for everyone. It was a dim lit, mostly empty space, with a few bare shelves, but they did have water. However, instead of necessities that you would normally find in your neighborhood store, this place predominately had merchandise. Chernobyl merchandise. T-shirts, coffee mugs, calendars, the list goes on. All of which read “CHERNOBYL 4-26-86” with the universal sign for radioactivity replacing the “O” in Chernobyl. It almost felt like a scene out of Spaceballs. “Chernobyl the lunchbox, Chernobyl the breakfast cereal, Chernobyl the Flame Thrower- the kids love this one.” So I did what any late-twenties American would do. I bought as much stuff as I could carry. Chernobyl Episode 5 watch online. Reports of long-term health effects from Chernobyl vary, but the disaster contaminated an area inhabited by millions. Pripyat and other communities in the exclusion zone have become decaying ghost towns. And despite the fact that experts say that the areas closest to the reactor will be uninhabitable for 3,000 years, some have ignored warnings of radiation and returned to their villages at the outer portions of the exclusion zone. Some areas have been deemed safe enough for at least short visits, including Pripyat, which now sees some 60,000 tourists per year, the BBC reports. The city’s nearly unused amusement park has become an eerie symbol of the disaster. How much of HBO’s Chernobyl is true? One thing that definitely isn’t true-to-life about the miniseries are the character’s accents. The English-language show is a co-production with the UK network Sky and features a largely British cast performing in their natural voices instead of affecting Russian or Ukrainian accents. The series tells the story of scientists, engineers, and first responders involved in the disaster and its aftermath, and hews closely to the real life events. Most major characters are based on real people, like Jared Harris’s Valery Legasov, the whistleblowing chemist who lead the investigation into the disaster, and Stellan Skarsgaard’s Boris Shcherbina, then the USSR’s Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers. However, Emily Watson’s character, principled nuclear expert Ulana Khomyuk, is a composite based on several scientists who responded to the disaster. We knew someone was hurt, and that all the events leading up to the end would have an injury. That is really what made the episode work. The writers included many potential dangers that left us guessing exactly how the injury would occur. There was the zip line, rock wall, bugs and lizards, and the crossbow (I know, wtf). But in the end, it was Claire’s benign arts and crafts table that did in Luke. Ignored all day, the beads took vengeance on Luke, sending him to the ground with a broken arm. In the commotion of the crazy chain reaction set off by Phil (or I suppose Fizbo/Cam), the one thing no one expected to harm anyone was the culprit. Phil’s sarcastic attitude toward Claire was fun, and showed that he can be clueless and snarky at the same time. So far, Phil has been a total idiot, but making fun of Claire added another side to him. Manny continues to be delightful with his mature attitude and adult ways.|Decades after the catastrophic explosion at the Chernobyl plant in Ukraine, HBO gives an in-depth look at the accident in a five-part miniseries that stars Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgard, and Emily Watson. The chilling trailer looks as though it’s a horror movie, but it’s really based on a true story of a full-blown international crisis. The disaster is considered the worst nuclear plant disaster in human history, triggering harrowing health and economic effects. Before you watch the new show, here’s what you need to know about the background and consequences of the tragic event. The Chernobyl plant was located around 60 miles away from Kiev near the small town of Pripyat in Ukraine. During the time of the nuclear disaster, Ukraine had still been part of the Soviet Union. Originally established in the ’70s to accommodate plant workers, the now-abandoned Pripyat had a population of between 40,000 to 50,000 inhabitants. What caused the explosions? Chernobyl 5 Episode.
Here we are again on a Friday! First of all, I had major issues with getting images on this post. Every time I’d hit return, everything above would disappear. And after puzzling over this for a while, I just decided to work with it the way it is. Yesterday I went to the Girls State Track Meet in Des Moines. Middle Sister qualified in the 3000, so it was exciting to watch her compete with some great runners. It was a beautiful day, but I am glad Middle Sister ran in the morning since temps in the afternoon were over 90 degrees. We haven’t seen weather like that since last summer! 1. RIKILIO Pajama Set- I used to wear pajamas every night. I’ve moved to the type of person who wears their exercise clothes to bed so I will feel more obligated to get up and work out when my alarm goes off (this trick only works some of the time). If I were a pajama wearing person, I’d really like these. [b]Chernobyl Episode 5[/b] watch online.
