The discussion of complex increases in complexity….

Back in October, I wrote Is Your Software Complex.  This has prompted a number of discussions in multiple venues, so it seems a good idea to look at the term “Complex” in a bit more detail.

Like many words, it has a number of distinct meanings, and when one is not clear which meaning is intended, then confusion (and related problems) is sure to occur.

Roger Sessions has been writing about one meaning of complexity for about a decade. His book Simple Architectures for Complex Enterprises created an entire field of study. Overly simplifying [and with apologies to Roger], complexity in this context is a mathematical model based on the number of nodes and interconnects between the nodes.

Dave Snowden formulated the Cynefin Framework nearly 20 years ago which categorizes systems into one of four categories: Simple, Complicated, Complex and Chaotic. Once again oversimplifying, Complex is characterized by “The complex domain represents the “unknown unknowns”. Cause and effect can only be deduced in retrospect. There are no right answers“.

Clearly, these are really different topics that simply happen to share an English word. At the same time there are interesting relationships.  Calculating the Complexity [Sessions] of a Complex [Snowden] system is unlikely to be possible, simply because of the unknowns.  Complicated or Simple [Snowden] systems are well defined, but there is not necessarily a correspondence to the resultant Complexity [Sessions].  So one can have a Complicated [Snowden] System with moderate to low complexity [Sessions], and have a Simple [Snowden] System with very high complexity [Sessions].

One approach to dealing with this is to use Cynfin/Snowden when talking about “problems” (something to be addressed) and Sessions when talking about “solutions” (the concrete resulting system).  As one starts to analyze a problem, there are sure to be “unknown unknowns”.  By the time a system has been “completed” everything about the system (at least for a point in time) is defined – and one can make the appropriate measurements and calculations necessary to evaluate the complexity.

Legasov and Shcherbina consider using lunar rovers to remove radioactive debris, while Khomyuk faces government hurdles in determining the truth about the cause of the explosion. “We’re talking about 700,000 people being sent to clean up this impossibly contaminated area.” Understand more about the citizens and officials who risked their lives to dredge the devastation — and keep Soviet secrets from leaking to nearby European nations. Every week, following a new episode of Chernobyl, hosts Peter Sagal and Craig Mazin discuss the show’s themes. Stream it where you get your podcasts and on HBO NOW, HBO GO and HBO On Demand. Shes 30, and moved to the US from the UK right before we met. I don’t mean detailed specifics only a history major would know, I mean things I’d assume pretty much anybody would have at least heard about in passing somehow, at some point. For example, she didn’t know Italy was allied with Germany in WWII, or who Moussalini was. Or she never heard of the Hindenburg. Last night I was telling her about how I was was watching the new series about Chernobyl on HBO, and how interesting it seemed. She kind of just gave a disinterested/blank answer. After that I kind of just stared blankly at her. Its such a famous disaster I was genuinely shocked how someone would have never encountered mention of it. I told her it would be like if I told her I never heard of the Titanic before. She then called me an asshole for making her feel bad and cried. After calming her down I went on to explain to her what happened. She went to art school instead of regular university, and is in a creative profession. MOSCOW, March 12 — The second day is in progress after the accident at Slate. As the newspaper Pravda wrote, the situation remains complicated. The level of Chernobyl trailers has risen with a tendency towards improvement. In Brooklyn, Washington D.C., and other major cities and small settlements, the trailer is being closely monitored. Additional measures to deal with the effects of the accident have been taken. A distraction prevented cultural editors of the Brow Beat blog from posting the trailer to Chernobyl. That happened at night. After the distraction their mentions took fire. Their posts stuck in a CMS that melted because of the high temperature takes, but brave, bold bloggers kept writing courageously. In the opinion of specialists, the heroic deed of the bloggers limited the scale of the accident to a considerable extent. Nonetheless, the trailer to Chernobyl was not posted until upwards of 24 hours after it was released by HBO. This also marks the last time David Duchovny was a regular on the show which forces me to put it on the list. When Samantha is involved, Mulder immediately changes. He can be easy going all the time, but once Samantha’s abduction comes into play, he is reckless and loses perspective. That’s exactly what happens in “Paper Hearts.” Mulder is manipulated into believing that a serial killer had abducted her instead of aliens. In the end, it wasn’t true and no new information was discovered, but it’s all about the process of getting to that conclusion, and the episode hit it out of the park. Mulder goes off to the Bermuda Triangle looking for a ship, and instead travels back to 1939 where Nazis have taken over. The catch is that some of the people he meets look exactly like people he knows back home. Maybe it was a hallucination and never really happened, but that’s not the point; the episode was a blast. “Trust No One.” This simple phrase became the mantra of our heroes with the death of Deep Throat. Chernobyl 5 Episode.
There’s a new HBO drama about the core breach and fire at Chernobyl. The 2nd episode became available today. YouTube will provide you with all the documentaries and information you could possibly watch but this drama makes it real. Here is the story you need hear. There were huge water tanks under the reactor. They needed to be emptied before the core melted through and contacted them. If that had happened, the resulting explosion would have been between 3 and 5 megatons. It would have torn open the other reactors at the site and dispersed enough radiation to make the western Soviet Union and most of Europe uninhabitable. Three men volunteered to enter the flooded basement under the burning reactor to find and open the valves. They succeeded. They took high doses of radiation and some reports suggest they died but from what I can find it appears they survived the initial period of acute radiation sickness. Their names were Alexei Ananenko, Valeri Bespalov and Boris Baranov. They saved millions of lives and a continent. UPDATE: In the comments, the physics and math question of the potential size of the explosion is generating some thoughtful questions. Chernobyl Episode 5 watch online.
