# The discussion of complex increases in complexity….

###### Hierarchical Testing – The Evolution of the Test Plan
December 23, 2017

Back in October, I wrote Is Your Software Complex.  This has prompted a number of discussions in multiple venues, so it seems a good idea to look at the term “Complex” in a bit more detail.

Like many words, it has a number of distinct meanings, and when one is not clear which meaning is intended, then confusion (and related problems) is sure to occur.

Roger Sessions has been writing about one meaning of complexity for about a decade. His book Simple Architectures for Complex Enterprises created an entire field of study. Overly simplifying [and with apologies to Roger], complexity in this context is a mathematical model based on the number of nodes and interconnects between the nodes.

Dave Snowden formulated the Cynefin Framework nearly 20 years ago which categorizes systems into one of four categories: Simple, Complicated, Complex and Chaotic. Once again oversimplifying, Complex is characterized by “The complex domain represents the “unknown unknowns”. Cause and effect can only be deduced in retrospect. There are no right answers“.

Clearly, these are really different topics that simply happen to share an English word. At the same time there are interesting relationships.  Calculating the Complexity [Sessions] of a Complex [Snowden] system is unlikely to be possible, simply because of the unknowns.  Complicated or Simple [Snowden] systems are well defined, but there is not necessarily a correspondence to the resultant Complexity [Sessions].  So one can have a Complicated [Snowden] System with moderate to low complexity [Sessions], and have a Simple [Snowden] System with very high complexity [Sessions].

One approach to dealing with this is to use Cynfin/Snowden when talking about “problems” (something to be addressed) and Sessions when talking about “solutions” (the concrete resulting system).  As one starts to analyze a problem, there are sure to be “unknown unknowns”.  By the time a system has been “completed” everything about the system (at least for a point in time) is defined – and one can make the appropriate measurements and calculations necessary to evaluate the complexity.

Chernobyl Episode 5 Episode 6 HBO. “Chernobyl”. HBO

The episode marks a transition where many parts of the government conspiracy become known with the alien blood, fetuses, and of course the Purity Control. Maybe one could argue that this is the start of the confusing stuff, but self-contained, the episode added a lot to the show, and gave us plenty of great stories later on. Sideshow freaks, underdeveloped fetus, and a general humorous tone to the episode. There was plenty of horror with the Fiji Mermaid, and yet the whole situation was funny. The weird combination made the episode lots of fun. The concept for this episode isn’t original as it has been done multiple times in various mediums; however, that does not mean the various incarnations of the concept are bad. The concept of timeloops itself allow for great creative freedom which usually ends up with a good episode. The X-Files did it very well with several ongoing gags such as the waterbed leaking. The idea behind the episode was so good that Fringe copied the concept, having someone be able to control the mind of others. What was unique about Modell was that he was able to affect human physiology. Chernobyl Episode 5 watch online. This is an RBMK reactor, which is a sister plant to Chernobyl. It’s the same type of construction and the same type of power plant. It was built pretty much at the same time. Now, this one is decommissioned, so they’ve taken out all the fuel from it. Nevertheless, it is such an ominous structure. The building is so big and so quiet and still and retro-futuristic in some weird way. Just the fact that this is a Soviet-era nuclear power plant was humbling and slightly scary. Were you able to talk to people who were at Chernobyl back in 1986? Oh, yeah. I spent time in Kyiv when we were scouting there meeting with survivors; liquidators and people who worked in the aftermath and the cleanup operation. Chernobyl is only 200 kilometers (125 miles) away from Kyiv. Everybody in Kyiv has a relationship to Chernobyl and Kyiv is a massive city with 7 million people. There were crew members who had parents or family involved in it and then there were people who were actually there. It was tremendous, actually. The lesson is that lying, arrogance and suppression of criticism is dangerous. The flaws that led to Chernobyl are the same flaws shown by climate change deniers today. How Much of the Series Chernobyl is Real? There was an unprecedented steam explosion that completely wrecked a reactor. Firefighters and plant workers—sometimes through ignorance and sometimes because of altruistic self-sacrifice—exposed themselves to huge doses of radiation to try to limit the damage. As for the miniseries, HBO calls it a “dramatization.” It’s a good description. The steam explosion was in fact dramatic: powerful enough to lift the 1,000-metric-ton lid off the reactor. It also was tragic. Thirty-one plant personnel, firefighters and other emergency responders died within three months from the explosion, radiation poisoning and other causes. Among the millions of people in the region, there may well be additional cases of cancer, although the number will be hard to pin down. But other parts clearly are dramatized. For example, one of the characters in the miniseries is there to unravel the mystery of what happened. But that had to be dramatized, because in the real event there wasn’t much mystery. Chernobyl 5 Episode.
Radiation is a force humanity has harnessed, but also one that threatens unspeakable destruction should that harness slip. From the start, film and television have served as both a warning and a coping mechanism to help us process the invisible terrors of radiation. That Adventures of Superman episode arrives at a happy ending, but only after suggesting radiation’s irreversible effects. Superman might be doomed to a lonely existence away from the world he loves, but others would not be so lucky. In the years after Hiroshima and Nagasaki, sometimes escapism didn’t offer much escape: The 1954 film Gojira (Anglicized, sort of, as Godzilla) uses a rampaging dinosaur as a stand-in for the atomic bomb. Its monster rains terror down on an unsuspecting city while causing destruction on an unfathomable scale, and director Ishirō Honda made the parallels hard to ignore. Beyond the obvious monster-as-bomb parallels, it features stark images of Gojira’s hospitalized victims that echoed those of the bombs’ survivors by then familiar from news footage and described in graphic detail in John Hersey’s Hiroshima.
