The discussion of complex increases in complexity….

Back in October, I wrote Is Your Software Complex.  This has prompted a number of discussions in multiple venues, so it seems a good idea to look at the term “Complex” in a bit more detail.

Like many words, it has a number of distinct meanings, and when one is not clear which meaning is intended, then confusion (and related problems) is sure to occur.

Roger Sessions has been writing about one meaning of complexity for about a decade. His book Simple Architectures for Complex Enterprises created an entire field of study. Overly simplifying [and with apologies to Roger], complexity in this context is a mathematical model based on the number of nodes and interconnects between the nodes.

Dave Snowden formulated the Cynefin Framework nearly 20 years ago which categorizes systems into one of four categories: Simple, Complicated, Complex and Chaotic. Once again oversimplifying, Complex is characterized by “The complex domain represents the “unknown unknowns”. Cause and effect can only be deduced in retrospect. There are no right answers“.

Clearly, these are really different topics that simply happen to share an English word. At the same time there are interesting relationships.  Calculating the Complexity [Sessions] of a Complex [Snowden] system is unlikely to be possible, simply because of the unknowns.  Complicated or Simple [Snowden] systems are well defined, but there is not necessarily a correspondence to the resultant Complexity [Sessions].  So one can have a Complicated [Snowden] System with moderate to low complexity [Sessions], and have a Simple [Snowden] System with very high complexity [Sessions].

One approach to dealing with this is to use Cynfin/Snowden when talking about “problems” (something to be addressed) and Sessions when talking about “solutions” (the concrete resulting system).  As one starts to analyze a problem, there are sure to be “unknown unknowns”.  By the time a system has been “completed” everything about the system (at least for a point in time) is defined – and one can make the appropriate measurements and calculations necessary to evaluate the complexity.

When he becomes more hardened to the task, Pavel is faced with the worst possible scenario – encountering a dog surrounded by a litter of puppies. Nikolai encourages Pavel to leave, with the gunshots ringing out over the abandoned area. The act of shooting puppies might feel like low-hanging fruit for an easy emotional response, but the shock feels earned. Barry Keoghan’s impressive performance also sells the trauma of the ordeal, and taking significant time to acknowledge the brutal slaughter of wildlife feels like something lesser shows would merely skate around. There’s heartbreak outside this story thread too. Valery and Boris Shcherbina (Stellan Skarsgard) attempt to reduce the disaster’s damage in the close vicinity by tackling the graphite problem on the power plant’s roof. This leads them to send hundreds of people instead for 90 second bursts to limit their exposure, with an incredible sequence following one man’s desperate panic to throw off as much graphite as possible. Chernobyl Episode 6 watch online. The episode marks a transition where many parts of the government conspiracy become known with the alien blood, fetuses, and of course the Purity Control. Maybe one could argue that this is the start of the confusing stuff, but self-contained, the episode added a lot to the show, and gave us plenty of great stories later on. Sideshow freaks, underdeveloped fetus, and a general humorous tone to the episode. There was plenty of horror with the Fiji Mermaid, and yet the whole situation was funny. The weird combination made the episode lots of fun. The concept for this episode isn’t original as it has been done multiple times in various mediums; however, that does not mean the various incarnations of the concept are bad. The concept of timeloops itself allow for great creative freedom which usually ends up with a good episode. The X-Files did it very well with several ongoing gags such as the waterbed leaking. The idea behind the episode was so good that Fringe copied the concept, having someone be able to control the mind of others. What was unique about Modell was that he was able to affect human physiology. It’s beautifully shot and as tense as you can imagine, with the act of doing something so dangerous to protect the Soviet Union’s image being both tragic and bewildering. After investigating the causes of the disaster, Ulana Khomyuk (Emily Watson) reveals how the problem may have not been the workers, but the original designs of the power plant itself. The tragic human cost is expertly scattered throughout all these decisions, with Ulana dropping the devastating news Lyudmilla Ignatenko’s (Jessie Buckley) baby died during childbirth due to the radiation exposure from her dead husband. Lyudmilla, however, has managed to survive, with the last shot showing her lurching dead-eyed over her bed with an empty cot. It’s the power of devastating truths against wrestling lies which makes Chernobyl such compelling, vital television. We already know the outcome from the flash-forward in the first episode, but the journey has been one of the most affecting and haunting shows to emerge this century. Chernobyl continues on Sky Atlantic and HBO on Tuesday. You can catch-up on episodes on NOW TV. Chernobyl 6 Episode.
Two people died from the immediate explosion, while 134 were affected by acute radiation syndrome. Within that number, 28 died (though the number may be much higher). Still, it’s hard to isolate the widespread and long-term effects of radiation. About 5,000 people who were children in highly contaminated areas have been affected by thyroid cancer, possibly from drinking milk from cows who grazed on radioactive pastures. Many engineers were held accountable for the likely possibility of human errors, but scientists have contended that there were flaws in the design of the reactor as well. Plant workers did not know about former nuclear accidents or prepare for future ones. What does the aftermath look like? The disaster yielded long-term health effects in addition to financial and psychological ones as people left their homes. Today, Chernobyl has become, shockingly, a tourist spot, even though it’s essentially a radioactive ghost town. The wildlife there, still, has flourished, with 400 animal species in the dense woodlands that have cropped up since the disaster. To this day, Chernobyl remains one of the most radioactive places on Earth. Even though decades have passed, nuclear experts say the area will not be inhabitable for at least 3,000 years, though a few locals have relocated or remained there because they consider it home.|Who is in the cast of Chernobyl? Jared Harris plays Valery Legasov in Chernobyl on Sky Atlantic and HBO. Valery Legasov was the Soviet inorganic chemist who was appointed as the chief of the commission investigating the Chernobyl disaster. While the Soviet government were continuing to downplay the scale of the disaster, Legasov was the man who challenged their version of events and was responsible for saving eastern Europe from near extinction. Legasov put together a plan which would reduce the spread of radiation and prevent the explosion of three remaining reactors. He was also responsible for spotting the exposed graphite rods on the roof of the power plant, which eventually forced the Kremlin to come clean about what really had happened at Chernobyl. He is also responsible for trying to figure out how you contain this event that has occurred, everyone knows it could happen but no one has planned for what to do if it does happen. The real Legasov, he suffers the same fate. [b]Chernobyl Episode 6[/b] watch online.
